It is a shameful act of AIIMS administration, which uses its efficiency and talent of upper caste people only for their own selfish objectives, while discouraging the centuries old oprressed communities to share thier equality rights, equality powers and equality in economical opportunities.

Efficiency & Talent of AIIMS administration is also seen in suppressing Infant killings recently exposed by an RTI applicant

Those people who try to sabotage students life because of the deep, insecure and sick paranoia about caste, must be stripped off their academic responsibilities.

All these IISc, IIT's, IIM's and AIIMS are just run by those elite upper castes (though all are govt. institutes) and this discrimination is going on for the ages. I think they are driving out their anger on reservation through display of brutal behaviors by playing with student’s career. These kinds of professors should be exposed in every institute and their names should be brought out online. In many places, Dalit students were not given good guides for research even though they are selected mostly on merit (among these elite faculties also there are good and junk faculties!). Lack of adequate dalit professors in the departments/institutes is a major set back for dalit students. Even if one or two are there, they hardly intervene in such issues (after all one man what he can do? he has to survive there among those elites). It is very pity on many dalit students’ life in higher education (in the United States of India?)

All of us have faced it some day in our life, no question in keeping quite. Case may be anything, all institutes/ organization should get together to fight case. Thanks to SC/ST employees union to show solidarity. Those who really don't believe and cherish casteism should also come together.

Hi BSN,
Castism is everywhere in India.Everyone face one or more form of discrimination ,Dalits
face more discrimination in the name of caste.Even science in India cannot keep away this type of casteism. It is known through lots of sources that IISc is in great caste polarization state
among faculties ,but there seems to be a few number of progressive faculties and it is surprising
that they have not come out openly. It is shame on humane values and dignity,it is surprising that not much coverage has been done in any mass media. It is not only Dalits, even women students face discrimination ,it is surprising that women cell in IISc Bangalore is working body or not? Lots of their miseries not redressed.
A national level committee should be formed to probe this type of tragedy in all educational institutes for Dalits and women students and come out openly for good suggestions and actions.

How many more like Chandra?
I was a student at the Indian Institute of Sciences 2 years ago as part of a training program. I have enjoyed so much this time and my work over there.
I was an international student from Europe.

I am angry to see that casteism prevails in IIsc, a landmark of excellence in India and abroad. Despite this dramatic event, IIsc will remain one top institution of studies in India and abroad.

With all my respect for IIsc officials, I am sad about their silence that talks aloud. What is even more sad is that people are being forced not to take sides.

Your silence is saying that you are not interested in opening a debate on casteism prevalence in IIsc in order to keep IIsc image up and not put your institution at stake.
This is what we call cynism. By ignoring facts, you do protect your interests and you eventually minimize what is being called a crime.

I not only support but do strongly encourage any moves from IIsc students to make their society a better and a more equal one.
I do encourage IIsc officials to step up and be an example of social justice by examining and promoting transparency when it comes to caste issues.

To Chandra's memory and all of the others who suffer in silence,

Caroline Courtois.

The issue of Mr.Ajay Shree Chandra's suicide in the IISc should open eyes of our educationists and all the policy makers. It is assumed that the constitutional protective measures are enough for the protection and welfare of the Dalits. However, the informal social networking based on caste, region, religion and language outweigh any kind of statutory support system. There is a feeling among the Dalit community that the statutory measures can only protect them. But in practice those who are coming from the vulnerable socio-economic background suffer a lot as the dominant/elite communities are having strong informal networking which they most often use against the Dalits in the universities and other workplaces. The people who are occupying important constitutional positions in the universities and other sectors interact with the students and faculty not only in a formal way but a lot of informal interaction takes place wherein the loved ones are invited to their homes for special dinners/parties.This informal networking makes the so called dominant groups to take the formal system granted. This informal networking of the dominant groups either among the faculty or staff or between the official and faculty;and students discourages Dalit students and they start feeling isolated and alienated. The Dalits start feeling threatened despite statutory provisions meant for their protection. Therefore, there is always a possibility that such discriminatory informal networking in formal system may compel a student from a Dalit community to commit suicide. Therefore, there is an urgent need to Curtail the informal networking among the dominant groups or steps should be taken strengthen informal networking among the Dalits.
